A major blitz through the three main towns of Mnquma Local
Municipality and surrounding areas improved environmental cleanliness and also helped
to clean up negative perceptions about our area.
In the latest efforts to improve environmental cleanliness
and minimise air pollution, about 200 workers from the Community Services
Directorate embarked on a clean-up campaign in Butterworth, Centane and
In April this year, Mnquma Local Municipality won the
Greenest Award competition after outshining six other local municipalities in
the Amathole District Municipality. The achievement was complemented with R50
000 in prize money which was used to purchase equipment such as blowers, grass
cutters and trimmers. The equipment was officially handed over to the
municipality soon afterwards.
As a qualification criteria, a team of inspectors in the
environmental affairs sectors visit competing municipalities to assess their
landscaping zones, maintenance of community parks, security at waste disposal
or dumping sites, distance from residential areas, and waste collection
methods, among others.
