King Phalo

Phalo Heritage Route is named after the Great King Phalo, the Absolute Ruler of Xhosa nation. Phalo reigned from 1700 until 1775 and is deeply etched in the memories of the Xhosa people for uplifting his nation by consolidating and strengthening their authority and power over other South African nations. King Phalo is also remembered for establishing the identity and values of the Xhosa nation. He was buried in Tongwana Administrative Area in Butterworth.
